Though once a hero leading Rhodesia in guerrilla warfare against its white colonists, Mugabe has turned against the people he once fought for, falling corrupt for riches and preservation of power. It’s not so easy to discern today’s popular opinion since his firm grip on Zimbabwe’s media, military and police have allowed him to exploit nationalist sentiment and to stoke fears of the country’s colonialist past.
