Happy Anniversary, Steven

Steven and I share three anniversaries. Today’s the anniversary of our Canadian wedding (7/24/04). We had a glorious day on Salt Spring Island – the wedding & a reception at Hastings House and an intimate dinner at the house we’d taken for the summer. Tana & Joe Christie traveled from Austin to join us. Leigh, Lily & Charles Christie from Seattle. Michele Dunkerley & Jane Hickey also from Seattle. Rev. Janet Maykus from Austin and performed the beautiful service. Tony & Liz from SSI, Liz a friend & the Canadian magistrate.

4/30/99 our super secret anniversary. 5/6/00 the anniversary of our Austin commitment ceremony, a date we share with Jill & Steven (they were sweet to host on their 10th anniversary)

Snickers

(Community Matters) Ok, I thought their Super Bowl ads were smart and didn’t find them homophobic, but this one is stupid and offensive.

John Edwards Toast?

(Community Matters) Let’s hope not

City of Austin Budget

(Community Matters) Appears new City Manager Marc Ott is playing it safe, rolling with the staff to maintain all services at near or existing levels. This is admirable, even if disappointing, since it’s no small feat itself.

There should be no sacred cows. You can’t tell me there isn’t waste and areas where technology couldn’t yield substantial recurring savings. Though, admittedly, this city manager has pledged to follow the lead of city council, and we shouldn’t expect an all at-large elected city council to be bold in remaking city hall. Each council member and our mayor have areas where they excel. My criteria for supporting the next candidate for mayor is going to include who can lead in remaking the effectiveness and efficiency of city hall & city services as well as provide the visionary leadership to build Austin’s infrastructure for the next century.

Obama in Berlin

(Community Matters) Doesn’t take the Brandenburg Gate.

Not since Kennedy have Berliners so welcomed an American president. Despite Reagan’s famous words to Gorbachev, we forget tens of thousands of Germans protested against Reagan and that authorities had to close the Berlin subway system for the very first time.

Who is Michael Goldfarb?

(Community Matters) An idiot skating on the razor’s edge here.

Huffington Post on McCain camp attacks Obama “never again” statement from Yad Vashem.

Shame on a Goldfarb for trivializing the “never again” promise.

Blue, Red & Purple Texas

(Community Matters) Texas Monthly’s Paul Burka details the political opportunities in Texas this election cycle here.

I previously touched on here
