I agree sensitivities would not be so high if President-elect Obama had shown any inclusion of the gay community in his appointments to date. Nevertheless, I support his right to invite Rev Warren. And, while finding the best & brightest for executive level appointments, he should be sure to include LGBT Americans.

I certainly do not mean to further alienate my LGBT colleagues, and I am following the chatter about the Secretary of the Navy position. There is a gay man reportedly being considered. One evidently well qualified and supported by several former generals, including pentagon command staff. And, Juan Garcia (not-reelected Tx state rep from Corpus and a former Obama law school roommate) is also reportedly in the running. I’m hoping it’s Juan. First, because I know him and think he’s a total rockstar. Second (and I have guilt about this one), I don’t want Obama’s first LGBT appointment to excite Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell supporters and opponents.

Don’t get me wrong. I hope and expect DADT will be gone by the end of Obama’s first (at most second) year. I just don’t want it to derail the focus on & O’s legislative success on our economy and other first 100 day legislative priorities. Posted from my blackberry.
