my response to an email suggesting LGBT leaders defending the Obama administration’s invitation of Warren suffer self-loathing: Your statement is as offensive and counterproductive as so many of GWB’s naive lines in the sand which have gotten our country where we are today. An apology would not be out of order.
Obama invited a man dedicated to missions including poverty, pandemic disease (including AIDS/HIV), illiteracy/poor education and spiritual emptiness, who gives away 90% of his income to charities, and who supports domestic partner benefits for same sex couples. Time magazine calls Rev Warren one of the 100 most influential people in the world. US News, one of America’s 25 Best Leaders.
Can we not imagine the value of his 22,000 weekly attendees and hundreds of thousands of followers feeling included in the celebration of Barack Obama as our next president?
Rick Warren wouldn’t have been my choice. And, I can see the logic and can support the decision of the most pro-gay equality president ever elected.
I hope others will too.
