Thom Singer on Biz Dev, Networking & Branding

(Community Matters) I just noticed on Thom’s website that he’s taking on two more clients for coaching. If I had a professional services business or consulting practice dependent on rainmaking, I’d certainly look into this.

Chilling

(Community Matters) I shared emails with an enlightened friend this morning on the topic of Zen. She shared with me this from a Sufi poet

Before you speak, ask yourself 3 questions: are my words true? Are they necessary? Are they kind?

Episcopalians Further Embrace Their Same-Sex Members

(Community Matters) “Earlier in the week, the church voted to open the door to ordaining openly gay bishops. And on Thursday the bishops voted to start the process of developing rites for blessing same-sex marriages, and to give the green light to bishops who are already doing so. “

Conference on Economic Opportunity

(Community Matters) Attended today’s luncheon on small business which is a series in advance of PeopleFund’s Conference on Economic Opportunity, formerly known as the East Austin Economic Summit

Today’s luncheon – sponsored by Capital One Bank – was a panel discussion about opportunities and threats in today’s economy. Leadership Austin’s Heather McKissick moderated. Panelists included PeopleFund’s director of lending, Jaime Noyola, UT’s Hopeton Hay, BookPeople owner & AIBA rep, Steve Bercu, GACC Vice Chair for Small Business, Debbie Johnson and Adrian Neely, Triad Building Maintenance Owner & a PeopleFund board member.

Lots of discussion between panelists and the 20 or so attendees who included Rep. Mark Strama, Mayor Leffingwell’s Chief of Staff Mark Nathan, Pike Powers, Capital One Bank’s Laura Mathieu, Suzi Sosa, Greenling’s Mason Arnold, MiniDonation’s Leo Ramirez, Capital City Chamber’s Dr. Chiquita Eugene, Margo Weisz, Hispanic Chamber’s Linda Medina, Collider Media’s Bryan Jones and several others. Discussion ranging from availability of strong labor/intellectual capital, leverage from buying local, stimulus dollars (don’t count on), hyper competitiveness and leaning up preparing for the economy’s return as well as niche opportunities in this market.

So funny, MN sent a sweet note after. I was thinking the same thing sitting between him and Strama.

Veterans

(Community Matters) I didn’t realize:

Obama won the vote of veterans under 45, taking 51 percent.

Hate Crimes Bill in Senate

(Community Matters) . . . being attached to a defense authorization bill – good for them. And, I realize the GOP criticism is just part of politics. We just need it passed. For those reading or seeing the criticism that it puts clergy at risk, please know this isn’t true. It’s politics at its worst – blatant lies and fear mongering. No party has a monopoly at this.

Maybe I’m finally growing less amused or even excited by the television grandstanding by each side – realizing it’s politics as usual, whether or not it reflects an individual legislator’s personal perspective.

The Sotomayor hearings a perfect example. Obviously, 75% for media consumption – she’s forced to play the game as well. oh well, I aspire to be appreciative of all who serve and to find some good in each. – Gail Collins on the hearings

Ambion

(Community Matters) Wow, someone should stop me from traveling to Starbuck’s, blogging and posting on Facebook when I’ve just woken up from a night’s sleep with Ambion. Looking back on yesterday morning, I realize I was barely awake for a couple hours after waking up. At Starbucks this morning, they kept quiet and when I asked about yesterday, they were very sweet and stated they had no memory. Well, I know I spilt my drink and must have looked a fright walking like Frankenstein doubled over with a bad back. Reading my FB and blog postings, well, I just need to beware.

in a note to a friend

(Community Matters)

I don’t want to be mad at people or circumstances. I just want Steven, my family, friends & communities to be well, enjoy life, succeed in their individual endeavors. Want less personal visibility and more impact helping others.

Graphic Story Telling

(Community Matters) Stories can be told graphically

Moratorium on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

(Community Matters) I haven’t been keeping up with blogs or even my list serve emails this week. Just reading about the potential moratorium and even about Senate Majority Leader Reid’s willingness to overturn DA/DT. wow . . .
