Gallup on Pro-Lifers

(Community Matters) Turns out the aboration showing pro-lifers a majority was just that. They’re not. here

An Evening Inspired By Many – Including Julia

(Community Matters) Two couples we’re awfully fond of and don’t have enough time together with – Bill Adams & Amy Donohue-Adams and Karen & Ed Hartwell.

Bill Adams, Amy Donohue-Adams, ST, Karen & Ed Hartwell

Three priests and two former nuns out of the lot. Bill & Ed are retired. (Father) Amy the head chaplin at St. David’s Round Rock & Karen retired as the administrator of UT’s Plan II.

They joined us for dinner – inspired by Julia’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking – pastry asparagus, tuna a la provencale, boiled potatoes, haricots verts and reine de saba for dessert.

Until tonight I never realized Ed was chairman of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal School’s board in the late 60’s – while the Texas Diocese was navigating integration. Bill & Amy just back from Salt Spring Island – the pictures & descriptions made me happy. We discussed Bill’s recent sermon calling St. James’ to prophetic action on race. I blogged about this prior.

and . . . They Must All Be Related to Sarah Palin

(Community Matters) Palin

The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.

First, come on . . . . do people really believe this rhetoric? And, for supposed national leaders to be use fear is highly irresponsible. Where have the folks who currently enjoy government-funded healthcare beeen while 47 million Americans lost their health insurance?

Sally Kern’s Oklahoma Relation

(Community Matters) This guy must be related to Rep. Sally Kern.

The trend of controversial town halls contiuned on Friday when Rep. John Sullivan (R-Okla.) questioned the authenticity of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate and referred to a White House “enemies list” at a meeting in Tulsa. more

Happy 51st Anniversary Betty & Senior

I forget how much older Michael Mitchell is than the rest of us. His parents, our great friends, celebrate their 51st anniversary today. Milinda’s parents too but she’s like 20 years younger than MM.

Economic Recovery

(Community Matters) I am so glad it’s looking more & more as if I was wrong about the duration of our economic downturn. The cautious CFO in me still worries about a double dip – especially about implications of state budget meltdowns – nevertheless, I’m upgrading my most likely scenarios to more optimistic. TGF Sonia Sotomayor

(Community Matters)
So, we’re back to 2 women on the Supreme Court. Though, I fear Justice Ginsburg may not be on too much longer. Assuming just as well qualified, seems we should be shooting for 50% female representation. Justice Sotomayor’s back-peddling notwithstanding, of course the court’s decisions will be better as informed by an appropriately diverse body. Posted from my blackberry

Angry Mobs

(Community Matters) Paul Krugman, The Town Hall Mob

There was a telling incident at a town hall held by Representative Gene Green, D-Tex. An activist turned to his fellow attendees and asked if they “oppose any form of socialized or government-run health care.” Nearly all did. Then Representative Green asked how many of those present were on Medicare. Almost half raised their hands.
