Cap Metro

(Community Matters) What a disapointment – it’s recent track record of accountability and performance. While I adore Travis County Commissioner Margaret Gomez, I wonder whether now isn’t the time to welcome in a new board chair with more management and hiring experience commensurate with the enterprise? Certainly we need new leadership as we launch the search for an agency CEO.

Teen Theft Suspect

(Community Matters) Who’s this teen’s mom? Bonnie Elizabeth Parker? Quotes from the mamma:

I hope to hell he stole those airplanes — I would be so proud, Pam Kohler told a reporter, noting her son’s lack of training. But put in there that I want him to wear a parachute next time.

I figure I’ll spend my time with him in a positive way, she said, because who knows if he’ll be shot tomorrow?

Feds Fret About Commercial Real Estate

(Community Matters) Double dip? let’s hope not

WSJ: Banks in the U.S. “are slow” to take losses on their commercial real-estate loans being battered by slumping property values and rental payments, according to a Federal Reserve presentation to banking regulators last month. The remarks suggest that banking regulators are girding for a rerun of the housing-related losses now slamming thousands of banks that failed to set aside enough capital during the boom to cushion themselves when the bubble burst. “Banks will be slow to recognize the severity of the loss — just as they were in residential,”

Anytime Fitness

(Community Matters) Very cool concept – an unattended gym, Anytime Fitness. Well, actually, often someone there since they have personal trainers. But, the facility is open 24/7. You receive a fob which opens the doors. Steven’s been going for a couple of months. I just joined yesterday. Wonderful that it’s two blocks from the house on Guadalupe and 34th St. (Aaron’s old Nuvo space) and *very* reasonably priced. Plus I really like the owner, Glen. Haven’t yet met his partner, Carl.

disclosure: I get a month’s free membership if refer a new member. Though, that’s not why I’m thinking about it today. On my mind because I’m way too sore for the few squats I did
yesterday. Thank gosh for pilates this morning.

House Pizzeria

(Community Matters) House Pizzeria 5111 Airport getting rave reviews. Gotta check it out soon. Anyone been there already?

HMMLS

(Community Matters) Hosted dinner for the Harvey Milk Memorial Literary Society last night – or the members in town anyhow: Robert Torian, Gene Brenek, Jim Amick and Chris Long. Stiff, by Mary Roach received surprisingly high ratings. I didn’t get beyond page 23 because of the subject matter. Our next selection, Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol.
