(Community Matters) Western Galilee is a gorgeous part of Israel, northern Israel, along the Mediterranean, borders Lebanon.
Diane, Steve and I stayed near Nahariya, in the exquisite, stone beach home of Orit Guri, Amir and their 5 daughters; it sits on the Mediterranean sea. We were also hosted by Merav & Dori (they have 3 small children). Orit and Merav were guests of Diane & Steve while visiting Austin as member of Partnership with Israel, a program of the Jewish Agency and Federations around the US. The Western Galilee partnerships include Austin, Dallas and other mostly mid-West relations.
We even attended an elementary school festival for Orti’s girls.
The Gottesman Etching Center at the Kibbutz Cabri was quite a find:
This colossal work by Howard Hodgkin is on permanent display; it’s 8′ x 20′.
Atelier Shemi’s son-in-law gave us a tour of his studios and office. He was a member of the Kibbutz Cabri, actually its “mayor” for many years. I was struck my the Rothko-ness of Shemi’s paintings and wondered if Mark Rothko had every sculpted.
Leo Ray’s work
Leo Ray was also a member of Kibbutz Cabri. Loved hearing the first hand contrasts between Ray & Shemi.
I loved loved loved the Manolo Valdes. The one shown above is a monograph. I inquired but his work quite popular. They were asking $7k for this one. Valdes is not a member of the Kibbutz, but like many European artists, travels to Western Galilee to work at the Gottesman etching center.
I forget this artists’ name. He was at another Western Galilee kibbutz
