Tax Cuts & War Spending – Half the Projected National Debt

(Community Matters) This is why I get so exercised by those who speak only of our need to cut spending. Some fiscally irresponsible lawmakers cut taxes and intentionally left the wars off the books so we’d be exactly here

I’m not against cutting spending – but I’m also not for placating irresponsible and hypocritical legislators who preach deficit reduction while promoting additional tax decreases, maintaining rich tax loopholes for their corporate patrons and cutting services to women, children and families.

Is there any serious talk in Congress or within political parties about raising a war tax to cover past and current spending for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? I just did the math (with sources that I could find) and the current war expenses account for nearly 12% of our national debt. Couple a war tax with government spending and it seems like we could tackle the national debt. Is this too easy a solution? Trust me I’m not wanting more taxes, but for those who supported the wars, it would seem consistent then to favor paying for them.

I welcome comments and dicussion. If you take issue with my comment, I assure you, I’m no villain. Let’s keep it civil and respectful…agreed? I’ll assume you are not a villain either. : )

My first comment and already a terribly typo, sorry. It should read, “Couple a war tax with government spending cuts…”

      Sorry.
