Punchdrunk 3 Days

(Community Matters) oh yeah, gotta find out more. While reading an outstanding review of Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More in NY in the airline magazine – also read Punchdrunk is planning a 3-day site specific piece. You’ll show up at the airport, be handed an airline ticket and locker key, retrieve your provisions for 3 days and fly to the destination. They hope to launch next fall. Of course Steven and I are going!

Look Alike

(Community Matters) I’ve always reminded people of someone else and this trip especially. Walking into the US Chamber of Commerce Friday morning, one of the desk guards started asking me a question, only to be stopped by his colleague who said, “you know who this is don’t you?” You could tell he was confused, caught himself and offered up, “oh yes, of course, Sir. I was just checking.” I have NO idea who they were referring to.

Disembarking the airplane yesterday in Istanbul, while approaching the customs lines, I was pulled aside by a customs agent, who said to follow him. Oh no . . . . he led me directly to a separate gated area and told another guard something in Turkish. I walked up to the customs booth and another agent took my passport, flipped through and asked me, “NATO?” I just looked perplexed, he winked, stamped it, and sent me through.  Since I hadn’t checked luggage, less than 5 minutes. [how I missed my driver and Brent and took a cab while they waited 2 hours is another story]

KOMI

(Community Matters) I’ll post about this dinner in greater detail later. Wrote a long posting but lost at transmission.

Chef/owner Johnny Monis seems to be everyone’s favorite – 2007 Food & Wine’s Best Chef. Raised cooking in his parent’s Arlington, VA Mediterranean restaurant and spending summers at their birth town, a Greek island, Megan (our waitress) and John ( the sommelier) advised us to expect savory Greek/Mediterranean fare. The 15 courses paired w/ 5 wines and a rye beer were all surprises, nearly every one engaging the whole tongue. I have to go back with Steven. Though admittedly, this evening I took the metro, then the shuttle to Dulles, trying to even out a very generous spend. It’s very expensive and worth two nights at home, saving up that entertainment budget. Lovely and delightfully long evening w/ one of our dearest friends in the entire world, Sony Cohen Cramer. We started with drinks at my hotel, The Tabard, which happened to be just around the block from Komi. Ah – johnny’s Thai restaurant has just opened, Little Sorel (run). Posted from my blackberry

(Community Matters) Future of Entrepreneurship Education Summit

Speakers included Desh Deshpande, Gary Schoeniger, Jeff Sandefer, Jeff Hoffman, Margaret Spellings, Michael Gerber, Michael Hennessy, Naveen Jain, Ted Leonsis, Thom Ruhe and Tom Adams. I was asked to speak but declined – too much underway these last two months to prepare

Occupy Wall Street

(Community Matters) While in O’Hare waiting on a connecting flight, I watched coverage of OCW and today’s march on NYSE. It’s horrific that so many are putting a bad spin on the protesters. I’m not saying all are right, nor that some aren’t hangers-oners . . . . but most we met are thoughtful, respectful and democratically airing real grievances. Feels as if because these grievances are against the richest and most powerful industry, protesters are being sprayed, arrested, manhandled and otherwise disrespected. I haven’t heard any corroboration of the rumor that Homeland Security has been involved in coordinating moves against protesters around the country – I’d be devastatingly disappointed in the leadership if this were true.

Cooks’ House w/ Friends

(Community Matters) dinner last night with friends in Traverse City. And, Chef Eric joined us for a bit. Turns out he catered Megan’s wedding this summer

Censoring the Internet

(Community Matters) Such a crock – anyone with a general counsel could easily wreck havoc on free speech.

Joaquin Castro & Austin LGBT Support

(Community Matters) Steven and I are sorry to be missing tonight’s Austin LGBT fundraiser for Joaquin Castro at Billy Wilkinson’s & John Kerrigan’s. Assuming Joaquin and Lloyd Doggett aren’t pitted against each other after all, thank you Joaquin for the competition. We couldn’t get Lloyd to support marriage equality nor the repeal of DOMA until he had the competition. Now we might have two congressional representatives for full equality

UT Student Leader re: Assassinating Pres Obama

(Community Matters) Seriously, Lauren Pierce, a UT student leader, President of UT College Republicans, joking about assassinating the President of the United States?  And, this young woman is an intern for Lt Gov David Dewhurst?

Looks like she walked back the comments, deleted the original tweet, and apologized.

The Cooks’ House in Traverse City

(Community Matters) The Cooks’ House in Traverse City is literally one of our favorite restaurants in the world.

Knows what it is, doesn’t try to be more. Chef Eric Patterson is an outstanding chef. Theresa spreads magic around the front of the house. French chef meets Alice Waters meets Sebastine from Bordeaux who moved to the peninsula to farm. Tonight was superb, and we’re hosting a dinner party for friends there tomorrow.

Pedro & Buddy

(Community Matters) Still say no to separating Pedro & Buddy

Gay people – and gay penguins – are sick of being exploited for our genes . . . the reason we’re so attractive . . . . intelligent, stylish and gay is that we’re so incredibly perfect that all this isn’t meant to be passed on . . . . They probably wouldn’t have sex with a woman if they were the last penguins on the earth anyway.”

Occupy Demonstrations

(Community Matters) There’s a coincidence of movement against the Occupy protests all around the country. I’m against this. It doesn’t appear to be coincidence. I’d like to know from where it’s being coordinated.

Police Begin Clearing Zuccotti Park of Occupy Wall Street Protesters

The New York Police Department began clearing Zuccotti Park of Occupy Wall Street protesters about 1 a.m. Tuesday, telling the people there that the camp would be “cleared and restored” before the morning and that any demonstrator who did not leave would be arrested.

The protesters resisted with chants of “Whose park? Our park!” as the police began moving in and tearing down tents. The protesters rallied around an area known as “the kitchen” and began building barricades with tables and pieces of wood.

Officers told the demonstrators that the city had “determined that the continued occupation of Zuccotti Park poses an increasing health and fire safety hazard.”
