Adding to the Bucket List

(Community Matters) Where Gay Palestinians Go to Party

just last night some of us were talking about another trip to Israel in Sept ’13

Old Photos

(Community Matters) Went looking for the first one and stumbled on the other two:

w/ Bettie Naylor at a Festival of Dance party (on Gov. Richard’s lawn) benefiting ASA. I think Tana & Joe, Bettie, me and maybe a few others were honorary co-chairs. Charles Santos organized the whole thing

.

my birthday in 1990. Alan Waite’s surprise was a day trip to Berlin from London. Me and the other guy in the pic climbed on top of the Brandenburg Gate but the East German soldiers yelled & aimed their rifles at us which was effective in chasing us off

.

at my parent’s farm – I believe during the early 80’s. That would have been my hair style & ‘stache in college – not typical for a student body officer at A&M, which of course is exactly what I was going for

Increased Austin Property Taxes?

(Community Matters) What about not raising taxes? Gosh, sure wish we could hold down costs and perhaps bank the extra money from increased property tax revenues (rainy day fund). We could still spend increased sales tax revenues and find other savings for currently underfunded human services & infrastructure maintenance – To keep up with rising costs, Austin may raise property taxes for coming year

Bettie Naylor RIP

(Community Matters) We’re all gonna miss Bettie Naylor, who passed away in her sleep last night. She was a spectacular woman, American and Texan – an inspiration for Austin’s women’s political and LGBT communities for the last 30/40 years.

Neighborhood Scams

(Community Matters) from APD thru the NUNA list serve

“Residents and business owners in the Central West and North Central areas of Austin should be aware of a recent crime trend in the area: A male posing as a handyman is approaching residents and business owners soliciting yard work and other small construction projects such as painting, fence repair, deck installations, etc….

End the Euro

(Community Matters) If I were an unemployed Spaniard, that would be my rallying cry. Krugman sees this as an undesirable course of action – I’m not so sure.

I’m not so compelled by the good for globalization or regionalization of Europe’s economies. One only has to look around the world to see that individual protectionist barriers prevent a level playing field. All too often, a country’s blue collar workers absorb “the tax” while their financial industry enjoys the gain – if not gain, certainly the eventual bailout. Icelanders and Estonians have served themselves well by saying no fucking way.

Switch

(Community Matters) Our friends Chip & Dan Heath’s latest book, Switch, is highly  recommended by Steven. I’m just starting it. It’s about how we can effect transformative change – direct the Rider, motivate the Elephant, and shape the Path.
