Mombi

(Community Matters) hmm, gives some credibility to those stories of how Stanford faculty felt.

UT Performing Arts Opening Gala

(Community Matters) Sad to miss UT’s opening tonight – know they put on a great event. Timing is always difficult. Know that several of our friends departed DC for Park City’s Sundance Festival. Imagine many other Austin arts patrons have as well.

Tonight’s priority was celebrating our godson’s 16th birthday – we hosted a dinner party in his honor.

Rumor on the street is that UT PAC’s directorship offer extended to Kathy Panoff from the University of Richmond. I haven’t heard this off the 40 acres but indirectly from NYC. Big shoes to fill replacing Pebbles. Wishing the very best of luck to Ms. Panoff if rumor is true and she accepts.

The Sky

Annual ADL Stakeholders Meeting

(Community Matters) rats, thought I was getting better but I’m feeling worse.  Will have to miss an important event, the Annual Anti-Defamation League’s Stakeholder Meeting – which I’m co-chairing along with Judy Berkowitz and Judy Waxman.  Marcia Levy the yeoman behind this event too.

We’ll be reporting back on the good work of the ADL in Central Texas during the last year, especially our No Place for Hate programs in over 100 public schools. Also awarding Outstanding Educator awards to an administrator, a teacher and a district superintendent.
After, everyone joining in the main auditorium to hear Dr. Levine, “I Didn’t Mean to Sound Anti-Jewish: How & Why Sermons Go Wrong.”  (thanks to Irwin Salmanson)

apologies to my friends who I’m unable to join.  Many thanks to the generous suppoters.  More information at http://regions.adl.org/southwest/events

John Thornton on Obama & a Collective Fiscal Conscience

(Community Matters) I know John & Julie were in DC. We should have seen them in section 16 at the swearing in. Alas, my only connect thus far is catching up on his blog postings. I think this one on Obama, economic policy – the high road & the low road – and creating the consensus for real change via persuassion/mobilization is excellent.

Happy Birthday, Rev. Janet Maykus

Happy Birthday, Janet

Janet is like my sister – also questionably behaved at times! 🙂

Platform View at the Inauguration

(Community Matters) A unique perspective of President Obama’s inauguration

Can’t say where I got these or he’ll beat me. Nice seating though

Social Media Awards

(Community Matters) Evidently helps if folks will comment. Thanks Thom Singer and in advance to additional friends & readers who’ll take the time to also do so 🙂

Mayors Race

(Community Matters) My good friend Mark Nathan wrote me to say neither he nor Lee have had anything to do with the draft Lee movement. I know and like both Mark & Lee and trust their word, so apologize for saying otherwise.

I want to clarify. I consider councilmember Lee Leffingwell a friend, hold him in much regard. He’s an outstanding council member. My support for another candidate is in no way opposition to Lee.

I am supporting Brewster McCracken for mayor because he is a tireless worker with much vision and ambition. He’s got the energy to work even longer hours than most men of his even relatively young age, and he connects with voters in the progressive, business, youth, minority, LGBT and suburban communities. We don’t always agree on all issues, but he explains his thoughts and his decision process always sounds fair. We especially need a hands on mayor as well as a visionary at this challenging time. For this and many other reasons, Brewster is the right man in the right place. Posted from my blackberry

Day One

(Community Matters) The magical first 100 days. Will Barack’s defacto national stage reign since Nov 5 eat into his 100 day honeymoon? Let’s hope not. Love seeing his inclusion of the GOP/Washington elite.

First dinner party out at the home of conservative pundit George Will.

Monday night’s bipartisan candlelight dinners – especially the one honoring McCain which drew many of Texas’ elites including GOP stalwarts. I hear even Pat Buchanan is calling the One a class act.

And, while we’ve been lamenting a country in chaos inherited by the vessel of our dreams, maybe the economic meltdown, wars and tattered, global American standing represent unprecedented opportunities rather than obstacles. A little cover to reassess campaign pledges, the context for urging sacrifice & lowered expectations (not to mention a chance in hell we’ll actually comply) and how hard will it be to improve our international standing. We’ve already been taken to rock bottom by shrub and darth vader. The One finds us lined up to follow him out of hell. Posted from my blackberry. (from Washington DC’s National Airport, can we finally drop the Reagan tag?)
