Economy – Recession or Depression

(Community Matters)  In Paul Krugman’s column in today’s NYTimes, he doesn’t increase my optimism about our economy.  Thank gosh we have a new administration in just 15 days. Democrats and Republicans alike must set aside partisan bickering or we could spiral.  Barack, Reid & Pelosi must persuade GOP senators, and the good man from Kentucky must presuade his colleagues to vote courageously, rather than dogmatically.

Nip/Tuck

(Community Matters) I’ve never watched this show but news of the upcoming episode (and the trailer) about dinosaurs caught me off guard.

Cramers Do Costa Rica

(Community Matters) Four of my favorite friends spent the holidays in Costa Rica. Gable, Dio, Sonya and Reid are our dear friends in DC. We’ll be staying with them during the inauguration.

Eugene is satiated.

Pics from Marfa

(Community Matters) I’ve been a total slacker and haven’t been taking pictures. Consequently so many friends aren’t pictured in this set, especially our Marfa friends who joined us New Years Eve – including Tim Johnson & Caitlin Murray, Ross Cahiola, Tim Crowley & Kristi, Jessie & Daniel Browning, plus Kevin, Shannon, Blair & Justin.

Fiction or Non-fiction

(Community Matters)
I should start out every new year with a spy thriller. Just read David Baldacci’s, *Divine Justice* and will launch into Christopher Plummer’s memoir after I make lunch for Steven, Amy and Palo. Posted from my blackberry. Marfa, Tx. MB asked for my word for the year, “Next,” though Obama was a close second, in many ways the same motivation.

Rachel Hull & Michael Feferman

we hate missing their wedding today and send them best wishes. Posted from my blackberry

Wrapping Up New Years

(Community Matters) Alas, all good things come to an end. Tana, Joe, Margaret & Michael pulled out from the Paisano at 8 this am.

Kala, Zac, Jessie & Scott left just after brunch yesterday. Michael & Lawrence too.

Richard, Gary, Heath and Graydon headed to Marathon’s Gage for the night. Jill & Stephen leaving in a bit. Others’ yesterday, today and tomorrow. Steven and I will spend just less than another week here.

Time for some more quiet time and a bit of time with Marfa natives.

Parsons & Martha Clark

(Community Matters) Turns out I can’t stand missing Parson’s world premiere and even have tickets to Martha Clarke’s Garden of Earthly Delights. Joining Charles there next weekend, so we’ll come back from Marfa a couple days early.

East Austin Charter School

(Community Matters) hmm, I’m certainly not against charter schools, though potentially have reservations about Southwest Keys, its governance and transparency. As to charter schools, I’m a big fan of KIPP and the UT School. But, there are unconfirmed reports SW Keys’ CEO pays himself $600k to $800k from various affiliated entities associated with the nonprofit. I notice that a champion who helped him overcome previous community objections is a substantial vendor to Southwest Keys and that the school will pay rent to Southwest Key and share an administrator. Feels like Austin community leaders are being used to accomplish something Southwest Keys was unable to obtain approval for; something doesn’t feel right here. Hope I’m wrong.

(Community Matters) Been a busy couple of days.

Haven’t had a chance to post from Marfa but Michael Barnes has posted a couple of times so far Tuesday night and New Years Eve.

Happy New Years to everyone. ST’s been taking lots of pics. Will post this weekend. About to head into another evening with our friends at our place – pizza, wine & parlour games
