UK Climate Change Report

(Community Matters) Ron Oxburgh, a former chairman of Shell, led the investigation into the scientific analysis of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia and its conclusions about climate change/global warming – their conclusions a matter of much debate ever since hacked e-mails from the unit were made public less than five months ago. They were looking to see if the analysis had been biased and manipulated and concluded that if there was any malpractice at CRU they would have detected it. They found no such thing. Instead they found “dedicated if slightly disorganised researchers ill-prepared for public attention”. (they did not opine on the accuracy of the scientific findings)

The scientists in “climategate” did not fudge the data, a report finds

HelpHaiti – latest update

(Community Matters) Contributions to the Entrepreneurs Foundation/Austin Ventures HelpHaiti Fund now total $1.3 million, including over $350k secured by our partners in response to challenge grants. We’ve distributed nearly $1mm, including the $350k.

Most recently, Concern Worldwide met a $100k challenge grant and now $200k is being invested in 5 Child Friendly Spaces, giving children 5 to 15 years old the time and space to have structured, constructive, creative learning and play time to bring normalcy to their lives. The Child Friendly spaces will have links into Concern’s primary education program and will enable them to identify children that have never been in school before. Overtime, as classroom space and schools re-open, these spaces will segway into long-term education programs expected to serve approximately 30,000 children.

We also granted $50k to a new partner in economic empowerment, Fonkoze. They are “Haiti’s alternative bank for the organized poor,” the largest microfinance institution in the country with over 55,000 women borrowers and 175,000 savers. Continue reading

Too Big To Fail

(Community Matters) Inauthentic opposition – the lines literally written by Wall Street lobbyists – Republican Senator McConnell here

btw

if McConnell is serious that there should be no too big to fail, that’s terrific. Let’s amend the current legislation to include even more of Volcker’s recommendations. Republicans on the committee (admittedly also lobbyist led Democrats) watered down Volker’s legislation recommendations. Let’s tighten them.

Protesting Fred

(Community Matters) from my friend Don Boyd, probably the most effective approach I’ve seen in response to a Fred Phelps (Westboro Baptist) protest http://laughingsquid.com/san-franciscos-answer-to-westboro-baptist-church/

The Vatican

(Community Matters) It’s pathetic. It’s obvious those in charge in Rome are just as irresponsible now as always. The issue isn’t the root cause of pedophilia (which isn’t homosexuality btw), it’s the Vatican’s and the current Pope’s coverup and sacrificing of children for the “good of the universal church.”

now . . . “The Vatican’s second-highest authority says the sex scandals haunting the Roman Catholic Church are linked to homosexuality and not celibacy among priests.”

and . . . according to the UK Guardian the Vatican has also blamed Jews for the scandal . . .  “Allegedly speaking to the Catholic website Pontifex, [Catholic Bishop] Babini, 81, was quoted as saying: ‘They do not want the church, they are its natural enemies. Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God killers.'”
