Peking – Forbidden City

(Community Matters) Steven sent this pic from the Forbidden City. He connected with our friends John Erik Metcalf & Will Roman today.

John Erik, Steven & Will – evidently quite a few residents wanted pics with tall white guys

Anti-Defamation League, Ground Zero & Mosques

(Community Matters) ADL sometimes suffers from megalomanic leadership. Not sure why the national leadership felt a need to weigh in on the issue of a Ground Zero mosque and hope those reading the headlines will read further to note that it condemns all anti-Muslim rhetoric.

Boy Scouts

(Community Matters) NYTimes article about declining numbers in Boy Scouts. I’ve never organized against them or tried dissuading anyone from supporting them – heck, I was a boy scout.  And, they should discontinue their practice of discriminating against gay members.

This brings back too vivid a conversation with two relatives.  I remember when they explained that I couldn’t challenge their religious principles condemning homosexuality as immoral. It’s been nearly 12 years, and I still regret not explicitly rebutting that assertion. I’ve learned that a good test is replacing “homosexuals” with “White people,” “Christians,” “Blacks,” “Jews,” “Mexicans,” any other demographic.  If we wouldn’t tolerate a statement with any of those nouns, then don’t with any form of LGBT.  If you do, you are wrong and a bigot – perhaps a loving, otherwise compassionate person who I may love; nevertheless, a bigot.

Cape Cod

(Community Matters) up for a long weekend with my very dear friend, Barbara Woghlemuth. Arrived late afternoon, dinner at home, long chats on the deck – reminiscing about friends, especially Barbara’s late partner and my dear friend Kay Longcope.  Met Barbara & Kay in 1992 when they started the Texas Triangle. It was a courageous and pioneering business venture, the first Texas LGBT weekly, a source of pride for so many of us around the state. We’ve been very close ever since and have shared a lot of life experiences.  They knew Steven before I did.  I still break out in smile remembering how happy they were when we got together.

There are two iconic sayings in our small circle – “Everyone needs to find their Kay,” and “Kay & Barbara, Tom & Michael, and Steven & Eugene.” And, in fact, the Kays, Toms and Stevens need to find their Barbaras too.

Looking forward to a day on the beach and dinner with Hal McIntosh & Eric Varity.
