(Community Matters) pinched this from a Tom Spencer posting on Facebook
what most mystifies me are the implications of this growth on sustainability – water, infrastructure, the environment. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of the growth and the richness it brings our community. I love most of how Austin is growing up. And, if we don’t protect our environmentally sensitive public spaces, provide sustainable solutions to scale their enjoyment, they’ll look like the bare dirt of auditorium shores. Of course affordability is a huge issue too. NIMBY is the greatest threat to many of the affordable housing solutions. Hard to see how we’ll get around the choking reality of NIMBYism and Austin neighborhood association politics until we have single member districts.

And none of our city council candidates are willing to be too specific about it, just that we need more “choice” in housing to stay affordable. Would be interesting to see how single-member districts impact NIMBYism. I suspect it will be worse, but at least people would be more open with their views.
