A Year Without Politics

(Community Matters) This is gonna be a really strange year for us. Of all years to abstain from political involvement, I didn’t enter December imagining it might be 2012. This morning, I resigned from President Obama’s National Finance Committee and as co-chair of his LGBT Leadership Council.

As a result of my new position as board president & ceo for Marfa Public Radio and West Texas Public Radio (Midland/Odessa), I’ve agreed to refrain from political endorsements, fundraising and giving. Steven has agreed to abide by the rules as if our marriage was legally recognized.

I’m gonna do my best to refrain from partisan speak & even thought going forward – in my blog, on Facebook and in person. This may take some retraining.

Eugene, you can still discuss with Steven your opinions, and privately talk to friends. Your vow isn’t a gag order, just a guideline for the public you. Go you.

We are sorry to hear that one precludes the other. Wish you had waited until 2013 to be board president of the radio. We’ll miss your commentaries and Obama campaign will miss your funds and fundraising.

  3. Meh, the presidential campaign is pretty much dullsville anyway. Romney may well win the caucus or primary in every one of the 50 states, which will lead the press to call his campaign ultra competent and masterful.

The Fall campaign will be between two guys who look so similar: in temperament, ability, policies, etc. The political parties will try to rally their bases with pedantic pleas about how “there are very real differences between these candidates”. The Repubs will rely on wacky talk radio rhetoric about Obama’s “socialism” and suggestions of general incompetence in the administration (both untrue). The Dems will raise the spectre of an atavistic return to the dark Bush years and warnings about Romney’s judicial appointments (you know a campaign is grasping at straws when they resort to talking about judicial appointments.)

If there is a terrorist attack on US soil – an “October surprise” – Romney wins because people turn to Repubs when they feel unsafe. Otherwise, I think Obama has a good chance.

I can’t see any big happenings in Congress. I hope the Dems retain the Senate. Maybe a few Tea Party nuts will lose their House seats, but the Repubs have a pretty solid lock on the majority.

    Wow, very interesting decision.
