America & Israel – Has US Support Hurt Our Credibility

(Community Matters) Reflecting on previous Community Matters postings on the Middle East conflict, realize I’m harder on Israel than the Palestinians. Aren’t we all on those we love? I have great affection for the country and its citizens (as I do for Palestinians). Both times there I toured extensively and met with influencers; the last time venturing behind approved lines speaking directly with Palestinian leaders in the West Bank.

A great one’s achievement can’t be relative to an underperforming neighbor. Israel stands for something greater than itself, and yet, of course, its citizens have very practical, daily needs – security chief among them. I don’t have to admit imperfections, I do a better than necessary job of pointing those out from time to time. Yet, let no one doubt my commitment to the country’s security.

I’m compelled by the President’s position that good friends don’t just always say yes. The best teachers aren’t the ones we liked the most. The best friends aren’t the ones who only tell us what we want to hear.
