SEC Charges Freddie/Fannie Execs

(Community Matters) good for the SEC. Let’s hope we see more charges against those responsible for the 2008 economic collapse – ought to include claw backs.  SEC Charges Fannie, Freddie Executives With Fraud Over Risky Mortgages

End of War in Iraq

(Community Matters) . . . and yesterday I was riding in a cab with an Iraqi driver. We laughed – it was his first day as a cab driver in Sydney and he was driving around an American.

(Community Matters) Update: The Washington Post has withdrawn this story, noting that it was factually incorrect, that Romney was not using the phrase cited. Please see Editor’s note further below

Lowe’s & All American Muslim

(Community Matters) I don’t condemn Lowe’s for pulling out as a sponsor of All American Muslim. Doesn’t mean I’m not disappointed, but I’d rather applaud their originally sponsoring this reality television show which depicts Muslims as everyday Americans. We can’t demand American corporations engage in controversial political debates; of course they’ll try to steer clear and not offend customers. Florida Family Association’s condemnation of depicting Muslims in a positive light is reprehensible; shows them for the fearful people they are.

Obama Campaign Briefing

(Community Matters) Sorry to have missed this week’s national finance committee meetings in DC. From Politico’s Playbook, part of the public briefing. (btw, I love Cutter’s comment & hope we keep seeing more action bypassing our broke Congress):

THE MAP: During a briefing for reporters at the DNC yesterday, Obama 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina outlined five paths that would get President Obama to 270 electoral votes. Each starts with Sen. John Kerry’s 2004 map (246 EVs):

Sydney, Australia

32nd floor view

(Community Matters)  The 14 hour ride from San Francisco was easy – didn’t leave until nearly 11pm, so good timing sleeping much of the way (most for Steven) down. The flight’s head steward and one of the stewards in our cabin are 36 year partners and were very sweet taking care of us, especially in light of our celebrating Steven’s 50th.

We’ve arrived in Sydney, have two great views from our hotel room, already made the required pilgrimage to their Apple store*, and are seeing Cate Blanchett in Gross & Klein tonight.

*Steven purchases country specific Apple power cords from everywhere we go. Continue reading

Unwinding

(Community Matters) Doesn’t take long. Started the day with Liz Watson and pilates, then flight to San Francisco snuggled up with my husband. We’re gonna enjoy this time away, mostly just the two of us.

Long layover in San Francisco is perfect. We met our friend Cesar Torres at the House of Nanking (our favorite Chinese food in SF), then a stroll thru the Mission District before returning for our flight.

Friends are confirming arrival and departure from Marfa for New Years. So far 43 adults & 18 kids confirmed. Can’t wait. Posted from my blackberry.
