Kids Raising $50 million

(Community Matters) Met a young, gay man this morning who at 19 decided to do something about the 1 billion people in this world living without access to safe drinking water. He and his friends have since raised millions to bring water to women, children & men  in third world countries. Seth Maxwell has now decided young people can raise $50 million and solve the safe water problem for all the people of Zimbabwe.

Seth started the Thirst Project to mobilize high school and college kids to make great things happen. Very appreciative of my dear friend Beth Broderick for introducing us this morning – so sorry I was an hour late (ughhh, me and my bad schedule keeping)

Pass the Books. Hold the Oil.

(Community Matters) Thomas Friedman: if you really want to know how a country is going to do in the 21st century, don’t count its oil reserves or gold mines, count its highly effective teachers, involved parents and committed students.

certainly doesn’t speak well to our funding priorities in Texas

The GQ Travel Guide to Marfa

(Community Matters)  Marfa—population 2,000—is a blink of a town. It’s also a mecca for big-city art pilgrims, a foodie haven, and one of the coolest surprises in America  by Tobin Levy

Universal Cafe

(Community Matters) Exquisite meal and perfect wines at Universal Cafe, between the Mission District and Potrero Hills, with two of our favorite people, Catherine & Taylor Keep.

Loved the long conversations about Catherine’s new jobs at Philz’ & their church, about Taylor’s successful startup, VITAL Environments, and about how they are helping rebuild the neighborhood in the Lower Bottoms of Oakland. Funny, they are both all about building community, whether through space, convening or hospitality. Really love these two.

The Current Male Leadership of the Catholic Church

(Community Matters) Pope Benedict XVI, his Cardinals and American Bishops have taken to war against women’s reproductive rights and equality for gays & lesbians. They are fighting against women’s rights to contraception. They don’t only fight against equality in marriage for gays & lesbians, they fight against hate protection legislation. I don’t mean to be anti-Catholic; I was raised Catholic; As an Episcopalian, I’m sorta still Catholic. These men are misguided and very wrong.
