(Community Matters) I keep hearing that the City Charter rules, that council members of course support November elections and greater voter participation but that their hands are tied by the rules.
If I believed this rationalization, I’d have to believe that they’d have had me and Steven arrested prior to Lawrence v Texas which stuck down Texas constitutional laws outlawing relationships between same sex Texans. And, if they are that strict in interpreting rules, I’m not sure how a devout Christian reconciles today’s lifestyles with the rules laid out in Leviticus.
We elect leadership to read, understand and act on the nuances. Sometimes, leadership means transcending archaic rules – even the Texas legislature has now provided for this as relates to municipal elections. I hear lots of reasons why not, but there is NEVER a good enough reason NOT to support greater public participation in elections. Voters are left to only assume failure to vote for broader participation serves special interests.
hey, I don’t throw the baby out w/ the bath water. No one is perfect; no one is right 100% of the time. but, it is disappointing to hear the gross rationalizations. Now that ACC has decided to move their elections to Nov (& AISD is likely to do similarly) guess the economics aren’t as defensible any longer either
Agreed. “We elect leadership to read, understand and act on the nuances.”
