Love In Action

manos-logo(Community Matters) Love in Action . . . might just be the antidote for the overwhelmingness of this week. What a beautiful tagline for an important social services organization, Manos de Cristo. Steven’s agreed to create a monologue or vignettes and perform at their luncheon on 5/29 at the Four Seasons. We’re inviting friends to purchase a table and invite their friends.

grin-and-share-it-header-logo copyFor over 25 years with a solid base of support from Central Texas Presbyterian churches, they currently serve over 16,000 low-income local families annually, offering low cost dental services, language and computer literacy classes, and food and clothing to help people get back on their feet. Over 2,000 kids came “shopping” for back to school clothes earlier this year. While I was there yesterday, in their lobby touring with Sandi Tomlinson, Kerry Tate and Marie & Julie from Manos, I saw an older woman sitting, waiting for help, then something moved behind Sandi’s back. I moved a bit and spotted a young boy sitting next to this woman, probably his grandmother.

Mark Gibbs, RIP 1961 – 2013

mark gibbs(Community Matters) A life long dear friend, Mark Gibbs (a best friend gowing up) died in a scuba diving accident over the weekend. I can’t really remember meeting Mark. The son of my parents’ close friends while we were growing up and someone who moved to my elementary school, we hadn’t talked in person for a couple of years but had been in touch over Facebook. Devastating. So much history and such a great guy. Spoke with Mark’s mom last night. His dad and brother are in Costa Mesa making arrangements. I’m flying out tomorrow for the funeral – 10:00am Saturday at Rock Harbor Church located at 345 Fischer Ave. Costa Mesa. There will be a memorial service in Houston on 5/11 at 3pm at Langwood Baptist Church.

Kaufman, TX Killings

williams kaufman(Community Matters) Evidently the killings of two DAs and one wife were not Aryan Nation killings. The AAS is reporting a former justice of the peace and his wife have been charged.

Honor Mom By Helping Orphans

(Community Matters) Love Caroline Beaudreaux’s and Elizabeth Davis’ idea of raising $100k for an orphanage in India through Indiegogo as a mother’s day gift.  Miracle Foundation rocks!

The Miracle Foundation is an Austin nonprofit organization dedicated to helping orphans realize their full potential. Our charity is unique in that our interventions are measurable, scalable, guard against corruption and focus on the needs of the whole child. We literally transform institutional orphanages into stable, loving, nurturing homes where children can thrive.

Dinners w/ Friends

558976_10200340351444775_772166270_n(Community Matters) Super San Francisco trip – just a long weekend to see a bunch of friends and chill at our favorite getaway with my husband. Dinner Saturday with Taylor, Katherine & Amos Keep (Steven w/ Amos in pic) and Will Roman. Sunday dinner with Jessika & David Roth, Cesar Torres  and Will Roman. And, we just chilled on Monday. Weathers been beautiful; disappointed no progress finding our rental for the summer. I’ve gotta get back on that.

Karin Richmond: Blood on the Threshold

karin richmond(Community Matters) I didn’t know this story about Karin Richmond. We haven’t really hung around much these last few years but did a lot in the early and mid-90s. Just listened to Karin’s KUT interview – suggest you do too.  Her book Blood on the Threshold available now. PeopleBook book signing tonight at 7pm.

JULIE SPEED | CUT-UP

julie SWSA 0413 c(Community Matters) Cina Forgason hosted a dinner last night for Julie, Fran and a few friends in an outdoor courtyard within the walls of the 170 year old former convent and girls’ school, now the Southwest School of Art. Spectacular setting and wonderful conversations with friends and new friends including Paula Owen, Susan Ghertner, Lionel & Kathy Sosa, Mary & Bobby Cocke, Kathy & Chris Armstrong and several others.

The exhibit is strong, includes a few of my favorite paper pieces and wonderful gouache works.
