What We’re Hearing Today in DC

(Community Matters) Some notes of what we’re hearing today in DC . . .

The midterm elections – what’s been the narrative?

  • during the summer – Democrats in disarray
  • by Labor Day – Ds in disarray & could be in trouble, but those being  elected in the Republican primaries are nuts
  • last five days – the Ds may have momentum and the Rs may have peaked.  Is there enough time?

In previous years, the DNC raised $40mm – $60mm per year.  In 2009: $80mm.  Thru Aug 2010: $75mm, and Sept & Oct will be records too.

350,000 new DNC donors so far this year (never before have given to DNC – much more valuable than RNC $1mm donors)

DA/DT will be repealed in December

We’re still dealing with a very volatile electorate: will they vote and for whom will they vote?

Historically: midterms, party in power loses 28 House seats and 4 Senate seats

Univision (not FOX) has the largest, most loyal television viewers

Importance of early voting: Percentage of national voters eligible for early voting:

  • 1994  35%
  • 2006  47%
  • 2008 65%
  • 2010  71%

in national polls, among likely voters, Rs have an 8pt lead.  With Ds still considering voting: Ds +7 pts

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand – could be first female president (my opinion)
