47% Redo? Tone Deaf

(Community Matters) Host Of Infamous ’47 Percent’ Fundraiser To Host Again. Sorry, but this is tone deaf – Marc Leder To Host Another Romney Fundraiser In Florida

Mark Davis

(Community Matters) Drove to Houston and back today for my cousin’s funeral. I didn’t realize Mark was this sick. He died of liver cancer. This pic is probably 35 years old (he’s with his sister, Gina) but it’s still closer to Markie’s pic  in my mind.

Jack Risley & Amy Hauft

(Community Matters) Enjoyed meeting UT’s new art department chair, artist Jack Risley and his wife, artist & new UT professor/sculptor Amy Hauft. Both are new to Austin – Art & Education story.  Laurence Miller & Judy Willcott hosted a dinner introducing them to friends including Stephen Mills, Brent Hasty, Mike, Chris Mattson, Jeanne & Mickey Klein, Steven and me.

Impressed by both and encouraged by the investments we see Dean Dempster making in UT’s College of Fine Arts.

Due to bad policy, however, they have now become monsters of the financial midway that strip-mine cash from healthy businesses and recycle it mostly to the top 1 percent.

Photo Op

(Community Matters) Very uncool – the president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society says the Ryan’s popped in for 15 minutes and weren’t really helping anyone. They just posed for pictures, washing already cleaned dishes.

Cutoff From the USA for 5 1/2 Hours

(Community Matters) Marfa Public Radio, which uses the internet to send programming to KXWT in the Permian Basin, definitely feels this pain – not to mention while visiting and working from the house, I regularly encounter the constant variability of the internet signal.

GEORGE A. COVINGTON: An area stretching from El Paso county on the west to Seminole on the north and at least 100 miles east of Alpine was cut off from AT&T internet, long distance, and cell phone service. That makes the third time in 8 months that an area larger than New England has effectively been cut off from the United States of America. Big Bend Now

Marfa: UFO Sighting

(Community Matters) UFO sighting in Ft. Davis:  My wife and I were driving between Alpine and Fort Davis, Texas after a short vacation. I glanced out my driver side window and saw an white colored object in a clear blue sky. I asked my wife if she could see the object and she concurred. I then pulled over on the rural highway and we watched it hover for at least ten minutes until we decided to head on with our trip. I took several photos with a digital camera but they didn’t come out that good. There was no sound and no discernible movement. After driving off we watched it and could tell with the changing perspective that it could have been four to six miles away from our location and that it was enormous. between 100-300 feet in length. We lost sight after driving on through the Davis Mountains.

Surveyed: Austin

this is super. I’d like to see the entire survey, including the crosstabs

Veep Debate

(Community Matters) Below see selected tweets from last night’s debate. I thought both candidates did well – VP Biden is just too real not to love. Appears polls showing voters think he won.

Martha Radditz was awesome. Sorta baffled that conservative pundits are saying she was biased toward veep. Good gosh, could she have led with a harder opening question for Biden?  As to the commentary that Biden was disrespectful, not presidential because he was smiling – see Churchhill’s quote below, and reminds me of when I can’t help but smiling when I’m listening to a young person either make something up or express an obviously naive position.

A bunch of the tweets from last night:

@JenKirkman Moderator Martha keeps reminding me I want a lady President. She, like most ladies…isn’t lettin’ anyone bullshit around up in heeeyah.

@annie_werner My uterus is gonna dress up as Joe Biden’s smile for Halloween.

Big Bird@BlGBlRD When Romney interrupts, he’s being passionate; when Biden interrupts, he’s rude, say the #GOP. To this I say *BuRrRrRr*. 🙂 #VPDebate

A Modest Certainty

(Community Matters) Congrats to my dear friend Dr. Frank Schubert on the release of his book on the philosophy of certainty – how certainties are created and how they are sustained by individuals & communities over time
